The documentation was originally kept in the "docbook" directory because
it was written in the DocBook markup language. That hasn't been the case
for a long time, so just move everything under "doc".
Move make-wsluarm.py to the tools directory.

We should do this anyway, but there's not even an active

Switch the wireshark-wiki-url attribute to point to
wiki.wireshark.org again. Make the few cases in the WSUG and
WSUG that don't use that attribute use it.
Also switch README.dissector

Update the capinfos page to reflect changes to correctly describe what
-a and -e do.
Update the dumpcap page not to mention rpcap, as it's supported only if
the pcap library supports it, and the only platform on which it's
supported by default is Windows.
Update the dumpcap and TShark man pages to remove a Linux-specific
message.

When the user switches profiles, re-apply any preferences they specified
on the command line, overriding those settings in the new profile.
Add a callout in the User Guide to clarify that command-line preferences
override profile preferences and continue to do so when switching
profiles.

We're not using the Windows Help system, so "Contents" is a little
confusing for the link that just opens the HTML User's Guide.
Also make the tool tip show the URL that's actually going to be
opened, meaning the local file when the local guide will be opened,
as done with the man pages.

Add more compress routines to Show Packet Bytes decode as.
Automatic detect which routine to use to avoid having a long list of
various decode as variants. Show the compress algorithm in the hint.

Add missing documentation for Show Packet Bytes decode as
Percent-Encoding.

Point to the WSUG, which is much more detailed, up to date
(the man page describes the UI from the GTK days), and has
pictures. The WSUG is usually distributed with the program.
Reorder a few items not in their current menus in the WSUG.
Add Show Packet Bytes. Add a few minor details from the man page.

The namne of the preference module is "Font and Colors," which makes
sense as we only have one font selection and several color selections.

Support the -F option from the command line for dumpcap and wireshark,
only supporting pcapng and pcap. Deprecate the -n and -P options.
Make the output resemble that from libwiretap, but implement it
separately because dumpcap intentionally does not link to libwiretap.
Request nanosecond time stamps for the pcap format as well; we believe
the vast majority of programs should be able to handle them at this
point. The Internet Draft of the pcap format specification treats them
as the same format:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/draft-ietf-opsawg-pcap
For now libwiretap still treats them as different formats, which allows
converting explicitly between them; this can be used as a workaround if
someone needs to convert to the microsecond time stamp pcap format.
If someone requests nanosecond time resolution to tshark using the -F
flag, allow it.
Update the documentation.

Unfortunately, while it makes more sense logically to put the
tables under the UAT listing, it changes the links of the individual
table sections in the chunked output from individual URLs to anchors,
which breaks the help buttons. That's a problem so long as #11266
is still open. Revert that part.

Clarify in the MaxMind Database Paths entry in the WSUG that the
default search paths are always searched and don't need to be in
the table, and what they are (especially on Windows.) Also mention
how to view all the paths, including the default ones.

Add Display Filter Expressions to the Analyze menu items table
Update the sections on Display Filter Macros to reflect that it is
no longer a UAT and the new filename.
Move the Display Filter Macros syntax to the section on defining
and saving Display Filter Macros to consolidate information on macros.
Indicate which UATs are per profile and which apply to all profiles.
Add cross references.
Put the UAT sections under the main UAT section.

Mention ss7pcs
Mention vlans
Man pages and WSUG:
Mention wka
Mention that global manuf and services aren't shipped but compiled
in and how to dump the information as a tshark report in the old format.

This reverts commit b52d9173f8f0201a360bc1d5ada38297a6e13553.
Resolved conflicts in:
* doc/release-notes.adoc
* packaging/nsis/logray.nsi:
Still install cloudtrail.dll to plugin path without version as
changed in f4e71562d09d52fccd63b1839afefdc500bfcc7a.
* ui/qt/about_dialog.cpp:
Still capitalize "Binary plugins" as changed in 2155ef34b00b7ddb758f2cf1d1eeb4a9eaa379fc.
* wsutil/filesystem.c:
Keep init to zero removed as changed in d0b143bbecf422db5b6f51b549726786e85a3540.

Add the ability to automatically switch profiles based on display
filters. Add an "Auto Switch Filter" column to the Configuration
Profiles dialog which lets the user associate a display filter with a
profile. Add a "gui.profile_switch_check_count" which determines the
number of packets or events to check.
When loading a capture file, switch to the first profile with a matching
filter.
Add a short description to the User's Guide. Hold off on updating
ws-gui-config-profiles.png until we're sure the UI is stable.

Since there is now a preference and checkbox for enabling and
disabling the IO Graph legend, display it even if there is only
one plot (or all the plots would have the same Y-axis) so long
as the box is checked.
Previously the logic was to display the legend if and only if plots
had differing Y-axis information, but now the user can use the checkbox
instead of relying on that heuristic.
Also, ensure that we replot the legend layer when updating the
legend (so that it appears or disappears without having to, e.g.,
mouse over the graph.)

Fix #13854

Add a function to explicitly convert a field from its value to
the value string output. We do this implicitly with some filters
(i.e., comparing an integer type with a value string to a string),
but having an explicit function allows it to be nested with other
functions and operators, or used for custom fields.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Add field expression functions to convert unsigned integer
and char fields to hex or decimal. (BASE_OCT is handled
somewhat different currently now, presumably because it
can't be used in filters, so leave that commented until
it is handled as a display representation.)
Currently string() always converts unsigned integers to their
decimal representation so it is the same as dec(), but possibly in
the future string() might use the native base.
These can be used in columns thanks to the fix for #15990

Change some instances of "packet" to "event" in Logray's menu items.
Remove "Export Objects" and "Export PDUs" and associated code. Remove
the packet diagram menu items and associated code. Remove the "Decode
as" menu items and associated code.
Use "Selected" instead of the parenthetical plural "Packet(s)" for
marking and ignoring. Remove an attempt at plural translation which
apparently doesn't work if we don't have a "%n" in the translation
string.

When showing the follow data as text (ASCII, UTF-8, EBCDIC, etc), add a
newline at each turn. Add the ability to show delta times between
packets and turns. Add a recent setting for delta times.
Make the initial dialog a bit wider.
Save and restore our scoll position when reading a stream.
Manually connect our signals and slots. Fix some clazy warnings.

Fix #16940

For file sets produced by multiple file captures, match both
the number before time and the newer time before number format.
Distinguish them in the return value, since files of different
formats are not part of the same set.
Also handle files with a compression suffix as well, as we can
produce that in captures. Since in multi file captures compression
is done when switching files, allow file sets to have a mixture of files
compressed and uncompressed. When doing a multi file capture and
compressing, the last file is not compressed.

Instead of requiring ${macro:arg1;...;argN}, allow the format
${macro;arg1;...;argN}.
The semicolon isn't used anywhere else, it's simple to support,
and already used in the macro syntax. It's easier to remember
if all the separators in a macro are the same.
The colon is allowed in literals, which is why it's not used
between the arguments in the macro argument list, and allowing
it after the name makes the grammar more complicated, including
tokenizing when having pop-ups of potential field matches in
the display filter line edit (#19499.)
Update the documentation for this. Also edit the documentation
for macro syntax in a few places where it implies that whitespace
in macro arguments would be ignored; in fact, it's significant.
