This reverts commit 9445403f9558901dc54c88754ff21795ea1803f3. cf_select_packet frees the buffer backing the dissection result (cf->edt) which results in use-after-frees when callers try to access the contents. See for example this call trace: * PacketList::selectionChanged * cf_select_packet(cap_file_, row) * frameSelected(row) -> ByteViewTab::selectedFrameChanged * addTab(source_name, get_data_source_tvb(source)) get_data_source_tvb returns the buffer that backs the dissection and must remain valid even after dissection has completed. If this is not done, then a possibly expensive redissection must be done in order to populate the byte view. The temporary memory savings are not worth it. This: 1) means that we don't have to flag the compression argument with a comment to indicate what it means (FALSE doesn't obviously say "not compressed", WTAP_UNCOMPRESSED does); 2) leaves space in the interfaces in question for additional compression types. (No, this is not part 1 of an implementation of additional compression types, it's just an API cleanup. Implementing additional compression types involves significant work in libwiretap, as well as UI changes to replace "compress the file" checkboxes with something to indicate *how* to compress the file, or to always use some other form of compression). 2018-07-03file: fix packet list update after dfilter change during live capturePeter Wu1-0/+1
During live captures, "cf->state==FILE_READ_IN_PROGRESS" holds and as such setting "cf->redissection_queued" from "cf_filter_packets" will prevent the packet list from being updated (no new packets are added and display filter changes are not applied). Fix this by not checking "cf->state" and instead perform an explicit check to detect the "update_progress_dlg" issue (see original commit). As "cf->read_lock" is implied by "cf->redissecting", remove that check as well (see "rescan_packets"). Print a warning instead of aborting in "cf_read" since I am not sure if that condition is currently prevented by its callers. 2018-06-28file: do not perform recursive redissections to avoid crashesPeter Wu1-0/+8
When packets are being read (in "cf_read") or rescanned/redissected (in "rescan_packets"), it could call "update_progress_dlg". That could end up accepting GUI actions such as changing profiles (which triggers a redissection via "cf_redissect_packets") or changing the display filter (which triggers another "rescan_packets" via "cf_filter_packets"). Such recursive calls waste CPU and in case of "cf_redissect_packets" it also causes memory corruption (since "cf->epan" is destroyed while "cf_read" tries to read and process packets). Fix this by delaying the rescan/redissection when an existing rescan is pending. Abort an existing rescan/redissection if a new redissection (due to profile changes) or rescan (due to display filter changes) is requested and restart this to ensure that the intended user action is applied (such as a new display filter). libwireshark now expects an epan_t to be created with a pointer to a "packet provider" structure; that structure is opaque within libwireshark, and a pointer to it is passed to the callbacks that provide interface names, interface, descriptions, user comments, and packet time stamps, and that set user comments. The code that calls epan_new() is expected to provide those callbacks, and to define the structure, which can be used by the providers. If none of the callbacks need that extra information, the "packet provider" structure can be null. Have a "file" packet provider for all the programs that provide packets from a file. 2017-06-05Allow bigger snapshot lengths for D-Bus captures.Guy Harris1-2/+1
Use WTAP_MAX_PACKET_SIZE_STANDARD, set to 256KB, for everything except for D-Bus captures. Use WTAP_MAX_PACKET_SIZE_DBUS, set to 128MB, for them, because that's the largest possible D-Bus message size. See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=100220 for an example of the problems caused by limiting the snapshot length to 256KB for D-Bus. Have a snapshot length of 0 in a capture_file structure mean "there is no snapshot length for the file"; we don't need the has_snap field in that case, a value of 0 mean "no, we don't have a snapshot length". In dumpcap, start out with a pipe buffer size of 2KB, and grow it as necessary. When checking for a too-big packet from a pipe, check against the appropriate maximum - 128MB for DLT_DBUS, 256KB for everything else. 2017-02-09Make the capture file's interface description filterableJim Young1-0/+1
This patch introduces the frame.interface_description field. While testing this new functionality it became obvious that we have a non-optimal interaction between the existing cfile.c's cap_file_get_interface_name(), the recently added frame.interface_name field and this new frame.interface_description field. The string returned from cap_file_get_interface_name() may in fact come from one of three different sources: the idb's interface name (if it exists) or the idb's interface description (if that exists) or a default text of "unknown". The string ultimately becomes the rame.interface_name whether or not the idb had an interface name option to begin with. This behavior does not allow one to test for the simple presence of frame.interface_name. The new peer function cap_file_get_interface_description() added by this patch returns NULL instead of "unknown" if the idb does not have an interface description. Should cap_file_get_interface_name() be similarly modified to return NULL if the idb does not have an interface name? 2015-02-24Qt: Apply recent settings.Gerald Combs1-1/+1
Add PacketList::applyRecentColumnWidths which set the packet list column widths from our recent settings. Make sure it gets called at startup and when we change profiles. Save the packet list header state so that we can restore it when we reset the model (i.e. freezing and thawing) and load a new capture file. Save the state when the user resizes a column. As a side effect this works around a weird bug that adjusts the width of column 1 at an inopportune time. Add a profileChanging signal so that we can save the main window geometry in each profile. Get rid of MainWindow::configurationProfileChanged. It was unused. Apply saved pane widths and heights. Note that we might want to add a separate pair of recent settings for the Qt panes. Use the last opened directory in the capture file dialog. Git rid of some unneeded Q_UNUSEDs while we're here. Start of refactoring Wiretap and breaking structures down into "generally useful fields for dissection" and "capture specific". Since this in intended as a "base" for Wiretap and Filetap, the "wft" prefix is used for "common" functionality. The "architectural" changes can be found in cfile.h, wtap.h, wtap-int.h and (new file) wftap-int.h. 2014-03-21Fix Bug 9903: 'Clicking reload-file ignores selected file format reader'Hadriel Kaplan1-0/+1
There's a relatively new feature in 1.11.3 to select a specific file format reader, instead of relying on magics or heuristics. If you select a file reader and open a file, open it, and then click the reload-file button or go to View->Reload or press the ctrl-R keymap, the file is reloaded but using the magic/heuristics again instead of the file format reader you previously chose. Likewise, the Lua relaod() function has the same issue (which is how I found this problem). I have tested this change by hand, using a Lua script, but I didn't add it to the testsuite because I need another change for my test script to work correctly. 2014-03-20Allow pcapng interface options to be available to dissectors.Christopher Kilgour1-0/+2
Interface options[1], and more generally pcapng options[2], are useful information that can provide improved dissector output. Prior to this change, only certain pcapng interface options were interpreted and made available to dissectors, e.g. the interface name or description. This change augments the situation by providing epan_get_interface_option( ), which returns an array of byte arrays if the option code exists (otherwise NULL). Each element of the array is a byte buffer containing the raw data of the option. An array-of-buffers is used because pcapng allows for multiple instances of the same option to be present in the file. All interface options found in a pcapng file are thus made available to the dissector. The implementation also provides infrastructure to collect options from other pcapng blocks such as the section header. Currently these options are discarded, but could be retained in the future to support more features.
