Cleanup:
- don't call col_...() and expert...() fcns under 'if (tree)';
- create/use extended value strings in a few cases;
- use val_to_str_ext_const();
- Don't increment offset if not used afterwards [set but unused];
- do whitespace cleanup (indentation, trailing, ...).
